Saudi Arabia Announces Global ‘Camel Passport’ Initiative for Identification and Registration

Saudi Arabia has announced a global camel passport initiative to provide formal identification and registration for camels, including microchip details and official records.

Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of a global ‘Camel Passport’ initiative, aimed at providing a formal identification and registration system for camels. The move is intended to organise camel records at an international level and strengthen regulatory oversight of the animals.

Camel Passport Project Launched in Riyadh

The project was officially inaugurated by Mansour Al-Mushaiti, Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Minister for Environment, Water and Agriculture. Officials said the camel passport will function as a standardised identity document, similar to official records used for livestock management.

What Is the Camel Passport?

According to Saudi authorities, the camel passport is designed to serve as a comprehensive identification and organisational document.

The camel passport will include:

  • Microchip number
  • Passport number
  • Date of birth
  • Camel’s name
  • Breed
  • Gender
  • Colour
  • Place of birth
  • Photograph of the animal for identification

Officials said the inclusion of microchip data will help ensure accurate tracking and prevent duplication or misidentification.

Aim of the Global Camel Passport System

Authorities stated that the initiative is aimed at:

  • Improving camel identification and registration
  • Supporting animal health monitoring
  • Enhancing data management for camels
  • Strengthening regulatory and organisational systems

The project is expected to help standardise camel records, especially for camels involved in trade, breeding, and cultural activities.

Millions of Camels Registered in Saudi Arabia

Saudi officials revealed that around 2.2 million camels are registered as part of the country’s national heritage records. The Riyadh region accounts for the highest number of registered camels, with more than 654,000 animals documented.

Camels hold cultural, economic, and historical significance in Saudi Arabia, and authorities say proper documentation is essential for their management and preservation.

Step Towards Structured Camel Management

The launch of the camel passport initiative marks a significant step in formalising camel identification at a global level. Officials believe the system will improve transparency and organisation while supporting long-term planning related to camel populations.
