Telangana: Computers to Issue Vehicle Fitness Certificates

To address the issue, the Transport Department has decided to completely overhaul the traditional method of issuing vehicle fitness certificates. Instead of manual inspections, the government will introduce a modern, technology-driven automated testing system.

Hyderabad: The Telangana government is preparing to take strict action against old and unfit vehicles in the state in an effort to curb rising pollution levels and road accidents. Officials believe that dilapidated and poorly maintained vehicles plying on roads are a major cause of environmental degradation and traffic mishaps.

To address the issue, the Transport Department has decided to completely overhaul the traditional method of issuing vehicle fitness certificates. Instead of manual inspections, the government will introduce a modern, technology-driven automated testing system.

Under the new initiative, 37 Automated Vehicle Testing Stations will be established across the state. The government plans to set up at least one such facility at every district headquarters. Considering the large number of vehicles in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Region, additional testing centres will also be created in and around the city.

The state government has approved funds of approximately ₹296 crore for this major project. The Roads and Buildings Department will supervise the work, and the tender process will be completed soon so that construction of the testing stations can begin at the earliest.

Once the new system is implemented, obtaining a vehicle fitness certificate will become mandatory but the process will change significantly. Until now, inspections were carried out manually by Motor Vehicle Inspectors, and there have been allegations that certificates were sometimes issued without thorough checks.

Under the new system, vehicle owners will first have to pay the required fee online and book a testing slot. They will then bring their vehicles to the designated testing station where advanced computerized machines will examine every component of the vehicle.

If the vehicle meets all required standards, the computerised system will automatically issue the fitness certificate.

Officials say the new system will reduce human intervention, improve transparency, and ensure that only technically safe and environmentally compliant vehicles are allowed on roads, thereby contributing to safer transportation and better air quality in the state.
