Hyderabad: The Telangana government is seriously considering a proposal to increase pensions under its Aasara social security scheme by ₹500, aiming to provide additional financial support to the elderly, widows, persons with disabilities, and other vulnerable sections of society.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, the government is adopting a phased strategy to fulfill promises made during the Assembly elections. Taking into account the state’s financial position, officials are reportedly examining the feasibility of implementing an initial ₹500 increase in the existing pension amount.
If approved, the pension for senior citizens, widows, beedi workers, and AIDS patients would rise from ₹2,016 to ₹2,516 per month. Similarly, persons with disabilities, who currently receive ₹4,016, would see their pension enhanced to ₹4,516 per month.
According to estimates from the Finance Department, even a ₹500 increase would impose an additional annual burden of approximately ₹2,500 crore on the state exchequer. At present, the government spends nearly ₹950 crore per month on pension disbursements.

The government’s long-term objective is to gradually raise the pension amount to between ₹4,000 and ₹6,000 before the next elections. Achieving this target would require substantial budgetary allocations in the coming years.
In the context of rising inflation, the proposed ₹500 hike is expected to offer some relief to economically weaker sections. However, beneficiaries and political observers alike are closely watching to see when the government will fully implement its electoral promise of providing a ₹4,000 monthly pension.
