TGSRTC Accelerates Green Push with Electric Bus Retrofit Plan in Hyderabad
TGSRTC accelerates its green push by converting old diesel buses into electric buses. Hyderabad to get 2,800 electric buses by 2027 under clean transport plan.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has stepped up its green mobility drive by launching a large-scale electric bus retrofit plan to reduce air pollution and promote sustainable public transport in Hyderabad.

Old Diesel Buses to Go Electric
As part of this eco-friendly initiative, TGSRTC has started a retrofitment programme to convert old diesel buses into electric buses.
- 200 buses allotted to Sai Green Mobility
- 40 buses allotted to Kalyani Power Train Limited
The contracts were awarded after tenders were issued in September 2025.
2,800 Electric Buses Planned by 2027
TGSRTC aims to deploy around 2,800 electric buses within the Hyderabad Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits by 2027. Officials expect this move to:
- Reduce air pollution
- Encourage people to use public transport
- Lower respiratory and heart-related health issues
Current Electric Bus Fleet
At present:
- 325 electric buses are operating from six depots
- 175 more electric buses will be added this year
To support this expansion, charging facilities are being developed in 19 additional depots.
New Depots and Charging Infrastructure
The corporation has also planned:
- 10 new bus depots
- 10 dedicated charging centres
The total estimated cost of this infrastructure expansion is ₹392 crore.
Successful Pilot Conversion
A diesel bus from the Musheerabad depot was successfully converted into an electric bus in 2023 and is now operating within Uppal depot limits, proving the viability of the retrofit model.
Public Support Sought
TGSRTC Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy appealed to commuters to support the shift towards eco-friendly public transport. Senior officials and representatives of the retrofitting companies reviewed the progress at a meeting held at Bus Bhavan.
With its electric bus retrofit plan, TGSRTC is positioning Hyderabad as a leader in sustainable urban transport while taking a strong stand against rising pollution.
