Hyderabad: Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, has been facing severe traffic problems for recent months now. The city’s roads have become a nightmare for commuters, with traffic jams frequently due to the introduction of Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) which might be useful in developed countries but not in a country like India where people don’t have proper traffic sense and cities lack advanced traffic infrastructure.
There are a number of other reasons for the long traffic jams in the city. One is the lack of a proper master plan for the city’s development. As a result, the roads are not able to handle the ever-increasing number of vehicles.
Another reason is the ongoing construction works everywhere by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). These works have been going on for months and have disrupted traffic flow.
In addition, many people in Hyderabad do not care about traffic safety and rules. They ignore stop line discipline and track discipline, and do not drive/ride in track properly. This leads to chaos and confusion on the roads.
Speed limit violation is another major problem in Hyderabad. Many people drive over the speed limit whenever they got a clear road which can lead to accidents.
Bottlenecks are also a major source of traffic congestion. These are narrow sections of road where traffic is forced to slow down or stop.
Commuters spitting while riding bikes is a common sight in Hyderabad. This is not only unhygienic, but it can also be a hazard to other road users.
Unnecessary honking is another major nuisance. People often honk their horns unnecessarily, which can lead to noise pollution and stress.
The no presence of dedicated lanes for buses, cars, auto rickshaws, ambulance, and fire vehicles is another problem. This leads to traffic jams and can also delay emergency vehicles.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is also equally responsible for the traffic problems. Corrupt officers allegedly issue driving licenses without taking proper driving tests. This means that many people on the roads do not know how to drive/ride safely.
Hyderabad traffic police more interested in issuing challans: Hyderabad traffic police are more interested in issuing challans rather than managing traffic.
Long traffic jams at signals: Long traffic jams at signals are a common occurrence.
Waiting time increased due to new traffic signal system: Waiting time has increased many fold due to the new traffic signal system called Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), which is totally failed. ATCS may be useful in developed countries where the traffic system is more efficient and people have proper traffic sense.
To make matters worse, there seems to be no coordination between the RTO, traffic police, and GHMC officials. This has led to the failure of the new Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS).
The long traffic jams at signals and the increased waiting time are a testament to the city’s traffic woes.
Solutions to the traffic problems in Hyderabad:
- Complete the ongoing construction works by the GHMC as soon as possible.
- Educate people about traffic safety and rules, including the importance of lane discipline, track discipline, and speed limits.
- Coordinate better between the RTO, traffic police, and GHMC officials.
- Ensure that the new Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS) works properly. (Manually controlled traffic signaling system was better than this ATC).
- Invest in public transportation to reduce the number of vehicles on the roads.
- Build more flyovers and underpasses to ease traffic congestion.
- Create dedicated lanes for heavy vehicles, cars, autorickshaws and bikes.
- Impose stricter penalties for traffic violations.
In addition to the above solutions, the government can also consider the following:
- Launch a public awareness campaign about the importance of traffic safety and rules.
- Encourage people to use carpooling and ride-sharing services.
- Provide incentives for people to switch to electric vehicles.
- Build more pedestrian and bicycle-friendly infrastructure.
By taking these steps, the government can help to make Hyderabad’s roads safer and more efficient for everyone.
