Vijay’s TVK to Stage Statewide Protest Against Waqf Bill in Tamil Nadu

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil superstar Vijay, is set to hold a statewide protest in Tamil Nadu on Friday, demanding the repeal of the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Chennai: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Tamil superstar Vijay, is set to hold a statewide protest in Tamil Nadu on Friday, demanding the repeal of the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. The protest comes after the Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday following a heated 12-hour debate.

TVK’s Statewide Demonstrations Against the Waqf Bill

According to TVK sources, the party plans to stage demonstrations in all district headquarters across Tamil Nadu. Vijay, who is leading the charge, has reportedly instructed district secretaries to coordinate and organise the protests, ensuring maximum participation from the public. The Waqf Bill has sparked widespread political backlash, and TVK’s move to protest against it is expected to further fuel the ongoing debate.

Waqf Bill Sparks Political Controversy

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, passed in the Lok Sabha with 288 members voting in favor and 232 members opposing it, has caused a stir across the political spectrum. While the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has defended the Bill, claiming it empowers minority communities, opposition parties have strongly criticized it. They argue that the Bill is “anti-Muslim” and undermines the secular fabric of India. Several state governments, including Tamil Nadu, have expressed their intention to challenge the legislation through legal and democratic means.

Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju defended the Bill, asserting that India is one of the safest countries for minorities due to its secular nature. However, this defense has not been sufficient to quell opposition from various political parties. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has already announced that the DMK will approach the Supreme Court to contest the Bill, signaling a legal battle ahead.

TVK’s Growing Political Influence

TVK, though a relatively new political entity, has been gaining significant attention. Officially launched on February 2, 2024, the party’s mission is to fight corruption and oppose divisive politics. Despite Vijay’s decision not to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, TVK has confirmed plans to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Vijay, who has made it clear that he aims for the Chief Minister’s position, has also stated that TVK will form alliances only with parties that recognize his leadership.

With protests planned across Tamil Nadu and legal challenges looming, the debate over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is set to intensify in the coming days. The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is expected to shift as TVK ramps up its opposition to the Bill, positioning itself as a key player in the state’s political future.
