Background of the LRS Scheme and Rebate
Launched in 2020, the LRS scheme aims to regularize unauthorized layouts and plots across the state by collecting fees from property owners. The government initially introduced a one-time settlement for the LRS in February this year, with a 25% rebate offered to those who pay the fees on time. Initially, the rebate deadline was set for March 31, then extended to April 30, and later moved to May 3. Now, the rebate deadline has been extended once again until the end of May.

Reasons for the Rebate Extension
The extension comes after various challenges faced by the authorities in the implementation of the scheme. These challenges include technical issues, lack of public response, and other administrative hurdles. The government has extended the rebate deadline multiple times to give property owners more chances to pay the dues and avail themselves of the discount.
Statistics and Progress of the LRS Scheme
Since the launch of the LRS in 2020, there have been over 25.67 lakh applications received from property owners across Telangana. Out of the applicants who have paid their fees, 40% have been given the necessary proceedings by the authorities. However, only 5.19 lakh applicants completed their payments by April 30, which is significantly lower than the government’s expectations.
Despite expecting around ₹20,000 crore in revenue from the scheme, the government has thus far raised only ₹1,863 crore. As a result, the government is considering further extending the deadline into June to allow more property owners to come forward and regularize their plots.
Further Extension Under Consideration
In light of the slow pace of payments and applications, the government is reportedly planning to extend the deadline further into June to accommodate more applicants. This extension will provide an opportunity for more people to take advantage of the reduced fees and finalize the regularization of their properties.
