World Liver Day 2026: Experts Urge Lifestyle Changes to Combat Rising Liver Diseases

On the occasion of World Liver Day, health experts have raised concerns over the growing burden of liver diseases, particularly fatty liver, and stressed the importance of adopting healthier lifestyles to prevent serious complications.

Hyderabad: On the occasion of World Liver Day, health experts have raised concerns over the growing burden of liver diseases, particularly fatty liver, and stressed the importance of adopting healthier lifestyles to prevent serious complications.

The liver, one of the most vital organs in the human body, performs nearly 500 essential functions, including energy production, detoxification, and strengthening immunity. Despite its crucial role, it often goes unnoticed until significant damage occurs.

Rising Cases of Fatty Liver a Major Concern

Doctors highlighted that fatty liver disease, now medically termed as Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD), is rapidly increasing due to unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, and rising obesity levels.

According to global estimates, nearly one in three individuals is affected by fatty liver disease. In India, the situation is more alarming, with approximately 38.9 percent of adults suffering from the condition.

Experts warn that the disease often shows no symptoms in its early stages and can silently progress over the years, eventually leading to liver failure or even liver cancer if left untreated.

Health data indicates that around 2 to 2.6 lakh people die annually in India due to liver-related complications. The prevalence of liver diseases has increased by nearly 169 percent between 1990 and 2021, primarily due to changing lifestyles and dietary patterns.

Prevention Possible with Simple Lifestyle Changes

Despite the alarming statistics, doctors emphasize that most liver diseases can be prevented through simple lifestyle modifications.

Maintaining a healthy diet is crucial. Experts recommend reducing the intake of refined carbohydrates such as white rice and opting for healthier alternatives like brown rice and millets. Including pulses, nuts, leafy vegetables, and fruits, while limiting oil, butter, and fatty foods, can significantly improve liver health.

Regular Exercise and Weight Management Key

Physical activity plays a vital role in preventing fat accumulation in the liver. Doctors advise at least 20 minutes of daily exercise or walking to maintain a healthy weight and improve overall metabolic health.

Avoid Alcohol Consumption

Experts caution against alcohol consumption, stating that even small amounts over a long period can damage the liver. They stress that there is no truly “safe limit” when it comes to alcohol intake.

Early Screening Can Save Lives

Since liver diseases often remain undetected in the early stages, regular health check-ups are essential. Blood tests, lipid profiles, and imaging scans can help identify issues early. Advanced tests like FibroScan provide a clearer assessment of liver condition.

Individuals with diabetes, obesity, or a family history of liver disease are advised to undergo regular screenings.

A Call for Awareness on World Liver Day

Marking World Liver Day, doctors urged people to adopt healthy habits and prioritize preventive care. They emphasized that small lifestyle changes can lead to significant long-term benefits.

“A healthy liver is the foundation of a healthy life. Early action and awareness can prevent serious complications,” said Dr. A.V. Krishna Chaitanya, Senior Consultant and Director of Liver Transplantation and HPB Surgery at Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar.
