Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday said he has signed his country’s application to join the European Union.

“Today I signed the application for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union. I’m sure it’s real,“ Zelenskyy said on his official Telegram channel.

Zelenskyy has asked the European Union to allow Ukraine to gain membership immediately under a special procedure, in the face of the Russian invasion.

Deputy Head of the Ukrainian President’s Office Andriy Sybyha said “President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a historic document – Ukraine’s application for membership in the European Union.”

The president signed the document jointly with Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
