HC Allows Right-Wing Rally Against ‘Jihads’ Ahead of Civic Polls in Hyderabad

As Hyderabad municipal elections draw closer, concerns are rising over possible communal tension after BGUS announced a ‘Dharma Raksha Sabha’ rally in Balapur with High Court approval.

With Hyderabad Municipal Elections approaching, concerns are being voiced over attempts to disturb the city’s long-standing peaceful atmosphere. The focus has now shifted to a proposed public rally by the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samiti (BGUS), which plans to organise a “Dharma Raksha Sabha” on January 24 at Balapur Ganesh Chowk.

The rally received a green signal from the Telangana High Court on January 21, following which the organisers announced that the event would be held under the slogan “Jago Bhagyanagar – Chalo Balapur.”

Controversial Slogans and Allegations

Earlier, BGUS had announced plans for a public mobilisation calling upon members of the Hindu community to raise their voice against terms such as:

  • “Love Jihad”
  • “Economic Jihad”
  • “Drug Jihad”
  • “Food Jihad”
  • “Land Jihad”

These claims have been widely questioned and disputed in public discourse. Despite objections raised by the state government, the High Court allowed the rally to proceed, after which the organisation termed the verdict a “victory of righteousness.”

Disputed Claims on Illegal Residents

In a statement issued after the court order, BGUS alleged that around 8,000 Rohingyas are illegally residing in the Balapur area alone, while also claiming that the government failed to provide figures related to Bangladeshi nationals.

The organisation further alleged that a large number of Rohingya and Bangladeshi migrants have settled in Hyderabad, referring to the city as “Bhagyanagar,” a name change demand that has been raised repeatedly by certain right-wing groups. However, historians have consistently stated that Hyderabad has no historical record of being officially called Bhagyanagar.

BGUS and Its Allegations

BGUS, which also organises the annual Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav, alleged that:

  • Hindu youth are being pushed towards substance abuse
  • Women are being lured into deceptive relationships
  • Forced religious conversions are taking place
  • Food adulteration and temple land encroachments are increasing

These allegations have added to the political and social debate in the city ahead of the civic polls.

Past Incidents and Call for Vigilance

Observers recall that prior to earlier elections, attempts were allegedly made to create communal tension in Hyderabad, including incidents linked to areas such as Purana Pul. However, timely police action and public restraint helped prevent escalation.

Appeal for Peace and Communal Harmony

As the municipal elections near, civil society voices are urging residents of Hyderabad—irrespective of religion or community—to remain vigilant against divisive narratives and to uphold the city’s tradition of communal harmony and peace.

The coming days are expected to be closely watched by authorities to ensure law and order is maintained during political and religious gatherings.
