GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan Orders 100% Collection of E-Waste and Bio-Medical Waste in Hyderabad

GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan directs officials to ensure 100% collection of e-waste and bio-medical waste in Hyderabad as part of a 99-day scientific waste management action plan.

In a major step to strengthen scientific waste management in Hyderabad, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan directed officials to ensure 100% collection of e-waste and bio-medical waste across Greater Hyderabad.

The directive aims to improve environmental safety and public health by ensuring proper disposal and segregation of hazardous waste in the city.

Strict Warning Against Mixing Bio-Medical Waste with Municipal Waste

During a stakeholder meeting held at the GHMC Head Office, Commissioner Karnan issued a strict warning that bio-medical waste must never be mixed with municipal solid waste.

He stated that:

  • Strict action will be taken against violators
  • Registered firms failing to collect waste as per rules will face notices and penalties
  • Waste management regulations must be strictly followed by healthcare establishments

Officials were instructed to closely monitor the handling and disposal of bio-medical waste generated by hospitals and healthcare facilities in Hyderabad.

Meeting Held Under 99-Day Waste Management Action Plan

The directions were issued as part of the 99-day action plan for strengthening scientific waste management across:

  • Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC)
  • Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC)
  • Cantonment Municipal Council (CMC) areas

The meeting brought together:

  • E-waste recycling companies
  • Bio-medical waste treatment facility operators
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partners

The objective was to improve coordination between government authorities and private waste management partners.

GHMC to Ensure Hospitals Follow Bio-Medical Waste Rules

Commissioner Karnan announced that GHMC will coordinate with Assistant Medical Officers of Health (AMOHs) to ensure hospitals strictly comply with bio-medical waste management rules and user charge norms.

He stressed that no negligence will be tolerated in the collection, transportation, or disposal of hazardous medical waste.

Karnan also called upon all stakeholders to work together in making Hyderabad a clean, safe and environmentally sustainable city.

Special E-Waste Collection Centres to Be Set Up

Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation Commissioner T. Vinay Krishna Reddy explained the new e-waste collection strategy for Hyderabad.

Key measures include:

  • Establishing special e-waste collection centres in each municipal circle
  • Conducting ward-level e-waste collection drives every Saturday and Sunday
  • Organizing collection activities across 300 wards within CURE limits

These initiatives aim to encourage citizens to safely dispose of old electronic items such as computers, mobile phones, batteries, and appliances.

Companies Encouraged to Offer Incentives for E-Waste Collection

Authorities suggested that private companies participating in the initiative could help increase public participation by offering incentives such as:

  • Cash payments
  • UPI transfers
  • Redeemable coupons

These incentives are expected to motivate citizens to deposit unused or damaged electronic items at designated e-waste collection centres.

GHMC to Provide Infrastructure for Collection Drives

GHMC Additional Commissioner (Sanitation) Ravi Kiran clarified that the municipal body will provide:

  • Ward offices
  • Collection centres
  • Basic infrastructure for waste collection drives

However, the pricing, payments and incentives offered to citizens will be decided by participating companies, without municipal involvement.

Several organisations also agreed to make direct payments for e-waste collected, while others offered to distribute coupons under CSR initiatives.

Retailers may also share information about households with unused electronics to support doorstep e-waste collection in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Moves Towards Scientific Waste Management

The GHMC initiative to ensure 100% collection of e-waste and bio-medical waste in Hyderabad is part of a broader effort to improve environmental sustainability and public health.

By strengthening monitoring systems and encouraging public participation, officials aim to reduce hazardous waste risks and ensure proper recycling.

The municipal administration has urged citizens, healthcare institutions and private organisations to actively support the e-waste and bio-medical waste management initiative in Hyderabad.
