Patiala: Two-time Asian Games champion, Tajinderpal Singh Toor, showed early form as he won the gold medal in the men’s shot-put competition on the opening day of the two-day 5th Indian Open Throws Competition at Patiala’s National Institute of Sports Campus in Punjab on Saturday.

Toor Dominates Shot Put Event at Indian Open Throws Competition

The 31-year-old seasoned shot putter hurled the iron ball to a distance of 20.51m, a season best, to win gold. “I’m satisfied with my performance,” Toor said after the competition.

The experienced athlete once again demonstrated why he remains one of India’s most reliable track and field competitors in the throwing events. His performance not only secured the top podium finish but also indicated that he is steadily building form for upcoming international competitions.

Consistent Throws Highlight Toor’s Performance

Of the six attempts, Toor crossed the 20m mark thrice, hinting that he was enjoying good training sessions. The other three attempts had no marks. His other two throws were 20.02m and 20.07m.

Crossing the 20-meter mark multiple times during the competition showed remarkable consistency in his performance. Such consistency is often considered a key indicator of an athlete’s preparation and readiness for major championships.

The competition also provided a valuable opportunity for athletes to test their abilities and gauge their progress early in the season.

Focus on Asian Games Title Defence

Toor’s national record of 21.17m was recorded in June 2023. His main goal this season is to peak later this year to retain his title at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in Japan.

The shot put champion has been focusing on maintaining peak physical condition and refining his technique to prepare for international tournaments. Retaining the Asian Games title will be one of the most significant challenges of his career, and performances like this indicate that he is moving in the right direction.

Athletes often use domestic competitions like the Indian Open Throws Competition to fine-tune their performance strategies before competing on the international stage.
