The Telangana government has officially released the Telangana caste-based survey report, revealing that Backward Classes (BCs) constitute over 56.33% of the state’s total population. The comprehensive report covers social, economic, educational, employment, and political aspects, offering a detailed demographic picture of the state.

Telangana Caste Survey Report Released in Hyderabad

The report was unveiled during a joint press conference at the Secretariat in Hyderabad by Ponnam Prabhakar, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare.

The minister stated that the report had already been discussed in the State Assembly. Based on its findings, the government has approached the Supreme Court seeking 42% reservation for Backward Classes.

According to the Telangana caste survey report:

  • Total Population: 3,55,50,759
  • Backward Classes (BCs): 56.33%
    • Includes 10.08% Backward Muslims
  • Scheduled Castes (SC): 17.43%
  • Scheduled Tribes (ST): 10.45%
  • Other Classes (OC/General): 15.79%

OC Category Breakdown

Within the OC category:

  • Reddy community: 30.47%
  • OC Muslims: 11.08%
  • Vaishya: 9.07%
  • Kamma: 6.56%
  • Brahmin: 5.98%
  • Velama: 2.56%

Notably, 21.49% (around 12 lakh people) in this category did not disclose their caste.

Telangana Survey Highlights Social and Economic Inequality

The Telangana caste survey report also highlights significant disparities in education, employment, land ownership, housing, and vehicle access.

  • Land ownership: Dominated by the Reddy community
  • Followed by communities like Yadav, Lambada, Mudiraj, Madiga, and Munnuru Kapu

The report indicates that among 56 major castes, there are wide variations in socio-economic status. Some Backward Classes are on par with upper castes, while communities like SC Christians and Kamsali are performing better than the state average index.

Rising Trend of Inter-Caste Marriages in Telangana

Another key observation in the Telangana caste survey report is the increasing trend of inter-caste marriages across all communities, indicating gradual social integration.
