Hyderabad: In a major breakthrough, the Afzalgunj Police in Hyderabad solved a private travels bus theft case involving a woman passenger. The police arrested the accused and recovered around 17 tolas of gold jewellery stolen during the journey.

The incident came to light after the victim reported missing jewellery upon reaching the city, prompting a swift investigation by the police.

How the Gold Jewellery Theft Happened in Private Bus

According to D. S. Keerthana, a doctor working at a private hospital in Hitech City, she traveled from Anantapur to Hyderabad on April 12, 2026, in a Meena Travels sleeper bus.

  • She reached Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) the next morning
  • After arrival, she noticed that around 20 tolas of gold jewellery kept in her bag were missing
  • She immediately filed a complaint at Afzalgunj Police Station

Afzalgunj Police Investigation and Arrest Details

As per Chandramohan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Golconda Zone:

  • A case was registered and CCTV footage was examined
  • Police traced the accused to Kadapa district
  • The accused, Annareddy Venkata Shiva Reddy alias Shiva, was arrested near Chinnachowk in Kadapa district
  • Police recovered 17 tolas of gold jewellery from his possession

Accused Modus Operandi Revealed

During interrogation, the accused confessed:

  • He was addicted to alcohol and betting
  • He targeted sleeping passengers in buses
  • On the day of the incident, he boarded the bus from Anantapur
  • He stole jewellery while passengers were asleep
  • He got down at Jadcherla after committing the theft

Previous Cases and Police Action

Police revealed that the accused has multiple previous theft cases registered against him. The case was successfully cracked by the Afzalgunj police crime team, who were appreciated by senior officials.
