Coal Firms Told to Stay Competitive Under New Policy; Focus on Quality and Cost Efficiency
Dr. Jyoti further pointed out that the lack of Compensatory Afforestation land remains a challenge, and granting CPSU status to SCCL would help in expediting new mining projects.

Hyderabad/New Delhi, April 21: Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy has directed all government coal companies to enhance competitiveness by maintaining high-quality standards and reducing production costs under the upcoming coal sale policy.
During a nationwide review meeting conducted via video conference, the Minister emphasized that as India moves toward energy self-reliance, public sector coal companies must adapt to market-driven mechanisms and ensure efficiency in operations.
He highlighted the proposed Coal Exchange mechanism, which will allow consumers across the country to purchase coal of their preferred grade from suppliers of their choice. In such a competitive environment, maintaining consistent coal quality will be crucial for sustaining market presence.
Reviewing the performance of Singareni Collieries Company Limited, the Minister advised the company to focus on supplying quality coal at competitive prices while achieving targets for upcoming mining projects.
From Singareni Bhavan in Hyderabad, SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyoti participated in the meeting and outlined the company’s future plans. He stated that efforts are underway to secure approvals for five new opencast mining projects, including those in Yellandu, Manuguru, Ramagundam, Goleti, and RK areas, which require forest and environmental clearances.
He also noted that approvals for non-forest land are pending for seven additional projects. The company is taking steps to improve coal quality and increase dispatches to prevent stock accumulation during the summer season.
Dr. Jyoti further pointed out that the lack of Compensatory Afforestation land remains a challenge, and granting CPSU status to SCCL would help in expediting new mining projects.
Senior officials, including company directors and key executives, also participated in the review meeting.
