Centre Lifts Petrol and Diesel Sale Restrictions from July 1 After US-Iran Peace Deal, Relief for Commercial Buyers

The Central Government will lift petrol and diesel sale restrictions for commercial buyers from July 1 after the US-Iran peace deal reopened the Strait of Hormuz and restored oil supplies.

New Delhi, June 30: The Central Government has announced that restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel at retail outlets to commercial buyers will be lifted from July 1, bringing major relief to transport operators and industrial customers. The decision follows the US-Iran peace deal, which led to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the resumption of oil supplies, easing concerns caused by tensions in West Asia.

Petrol and Diesel Sale Restrictions to End from July 1

The Central Government has decided to remove the temporary restrictions imposed on the sale of petrol and diesel at retail fuel stations.

According to the announcement, commercial customers, including transport operators and industrial consumers, will once again be able to purchase fuel directly from retail outlets without any restrictions from July 1.

The decision comes after the peace agreement between the United States and Iran, which resulted in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the restoration of oil supplies.

Why Were Petrol and Diesel Restrictions Imposed?

The restrictions were introduced in June because of a large difference between retail fuel prices and bulk supply prices.

According to the report:

  • The price of bulk diesel supplied to industrial consumers was nearly Rs 40 per litre higher than the retail price.
  • Due to this price gap, transport companies and industries increasingly purchased fuel from retail fuel stations.
  • This created high demand at retail outlets, leading to fuel shortages.

To prevent fuel diversion, hoarding, and to ensure equitable and affordable availability of fuel for all consumers, the government imposed temporary restrictions on retail fuel sales to commercial buyers.

India Expected to Return to Normal Fuel Supply

The report noted that India is a net exporter of refined petroleum products.

The temporary restrictions were introduced to protect the country’s domestic fuel requirements from fluctuations in the international market during uncertainty in West Asia.

With the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and improved global oil supply conditions, the government expects the country’s fuel supply to return to normal, leading to the complete withdrawal of the restrictions.

Who Will Benefit?

The decision is expected to benefit:

  • Transport operators
  • Industrial customers
  • Commercial fuel buyers

These customers can now purchase petrol and diesel directly from retail fuel stations without the temporary restrictions that were imposed earlier.

The Central Government has decided to lift restrictions on the sale of petrol and diesel to commercial buyers from July 1 following the US-Iran peace deal, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the resumption of oil supplies. The move is expected to restore normal fuel availability across the country and provide significant relief to transport operators and industrial consumers.
