Jagtial: Fresh concerns have emerged over food safety and hygiene standards in Telangana’s residential educational institutions after students at the Telangana Social Welfare Girls Residential School in Metpalli mandal headquarters of Jagtial district were allegedly served rice containing maggots and spoiled vegetables.
According to reports, students noticed insects in the cooked rice and complained about the poor quality of vegetables served during meals. The incident has once again raised questions over food quality and monitoring mechanisms in Gurukul schools, where similar complaints of food poisoning and unhygienic meals have surfaced in recent months.
The school accommodates around 530 girl students, many of whom depend entirely on the institution for their daily meals. Parents and local residents expressed concern over the lack of hygiene and quality control in food preparation and distribution.

The controversy deepened when journalists who visited the school to seek information regarding the incident alleged that Principal D. Madhuri reacted angrily and questioned their presence on the campus instead of addressing concerns over food safety.
The school had previously attracted attention following allegations against a teacher who was booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act in connection with the alleged physical harassment of girl students.
The latest incident has renewed criticism over the functioning of residential welfare institutions and prompted calls for stricter supervision, regular inspections and accountability to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
Parents and activists have urged the authorities to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident and take immediate corrective measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
