The patient had suffered a critical head injury in a road accident three years ago and underwent multiple life-saving neurosurgical procedures. Although his life was saved, he gradually developed severe deformities of both lower limbs that left him unable to stand or walk independently. Over time, he became completely bedridden, requiring extensive physical support even to stand.
Detailed clinical evaluation revealed that the patient had developed Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification (HO) in both hips, a rare but debilitating complication following severe brain injury, in which abnormal bone forms within muscles and soft tissues. The excessive bone formation, coupled with severe contractures of the hips, knees and ankles, had effectively locked his lower limbs, making normal movement impossible.
A multidisciplinary orthopaedic team at Amor Hospitals planned and successfully performed a highly complex, staged reconstructive surgery. The procedure proved to be a resounding success. For the first time in three years, the patient has regained an upright posture, functional weight-bearing ability and the ability to walk with assistance. He is now undergoing an intensive rehabilitation programme comprising specialised physiotherapy and gait training aimed at maximising his strength, balance and independence.
