Rythu Bima Scheme Discontinued? Farmer’s Family Left in Despair After ₹5 Lakh Claim Denied
The alleged discontinuation of the Rythu Bima farmer insurance scheme has left a farmer’s family in Nagarkurnool district distressed after they were reportedly informed that they would not receive the ₹5 lakh insurance benefit following his death.

Nagarkurnool: The alleged discontinuation of the Rythu Bima farmer insurance scheme has left a farmer’s family in Nagarkurnool district distressed after they were reportedly informed that they would not receive the ₹5 lakh insurance benefit following his death.
According to the details available, 45-year-old Orsu Ramachander, a Dalit farmer from Barkatpalli village in Veldanda mandal, died of a heart attack on August 29. Ramachander owned around half an acre of agricultural land and was survived by his wife and three children.
Following his death, Ramachander’s friends reportedly approached the local authorities seeking the ₹5 lakh benefit available under the Rythu Bima scheme. However, they were allegedly informed by the local Executive Officer that the scheme had been discontinued from August 14 and that no new claims would be honoured.
The development has reportedly left the bereaved family facing uncertainty at a time when they were expecting financial assistance under the farmer insurance programme.
The Rythu Bima scheme was launched by the previous KCR-led Telangana government on August 15, 2018, with the objective of providing financial security to farmers’ families in the event of the farmer’s death. The scheme provided an insurance cover of ₹5 lakh, irrespective of the cause of death, subject to the scheme’s eligibility conditions.

According to the figures cited regarding the scheme, between 2018-19 and 2025-26, the families of 1,86,363 deceased farmers received a total of ₹9,107.80 crore in insurance compensation.
The government had reportedly been paying up to ₹1,400 crore annually towards insurance premiums to provide coverage to around 42.16 lakh farmers under the scheme.
The reported stoppage of the scheme has raised concerns among farmers and their families, particularly those who depended on the insurance cover as a financial safety net.
The case of Ramachander’s family has brought the issue into focus, with questions being raised over the fate of farmers who died after the reported August 14 discontinuation and whether pending or fresh claims will be considered.
Further clarification from the Telangana government regarding the status of the Rythu Bima scheme and the eligibility of families whose claims arose after August 14 is awaited.
