Recent Crash Heightens Safety Concerns

The cancellation comes just five days after a catastrophic crash involving Air India Dreamliner AI-171, which was also bound for London. The plane crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, killing over 270 people, including 241 passengers and several MBBS students after it collided with a medical college hostel.

This deadly incident has rattled the aviation industry and raised serious questions regarding aircraft safety standards, maintenance practices, and regulatory oversight.

Series of Technical Issues Reported Across Air India Fleet

Since the June 12 crash, Air India has witnessed a string of technical issues and emergency landings:

  • An Air India San Francisco–Mumbai flight experienced an engine glitch and was grounded in Kolkata for inspection.
  • An Air India Express flight from Delhi to Ranchi was diverted back to Delhi due to a suspected malfunction.
  • Another Air India flight bound for New Delhi from Hong Kong was forced to return mid-air because of technical issues.

In the Hong Kong incident, Air India stated that the plane landed safely and was undergoing checks “as a matter of abundant precaution.”

Aviation Sector Under Pressure to Address Safety

These consecutive incidents have placed Air India under intense scrutiny, with aviation authorities and consumer watchdogs demanding transparency and swift corrective measures to restore passenger trust.
