Following this, multiple media outlets published fact-checks about how Shahrukh Khan, a global superstar, did not spit on Lata Mangeshkar’s mortal remains, contrary to the propaganda peddled by BJP leaders and Hindutva influencers.

India.com reported that the claim was SRK spit near mortal remain of Lata Mangeshkar but after the fact check it found out that “No, he didn’t. This gesture in Islam is performed to ward off the evil spirits or ‘Satan.’”

Similarly, The Quint also conducted the fact check and observed that several people on Twitter pointed out that Khan was reciting the ‘Fatiha’, a prayer that is said at someone’s funeral, and then blew some air into the wind, to complete the tradition.

With reference to Mufti Fuzail Akhtar, Imam and Khatib, Jama Masjid, Bhagalpur it explained that it is a well-known practice that is followed by people and is also referred to as “dum karna”, which translates into blowing of air.

Dismissing the claims, SQR Illyas, founder of the Welfare Party of India said that although the practice is not followed by everyone, some people do it to ensure that the dua reaches the person it is intended for.

Timesnow news concluded that as per many netizens, the actor was, in fact, ‘blowing air’ which is apparently a common practice in Islam.

During its fact-check Alt News spoke with Maulana Mahmood Madani, Islamic scholar and president of the Mahmood faction of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind who confirmed that Shah Rukh Khan is quite evidently not spitting on Lata Mangeshwar’s mortal remains. He is offering dua (prayer) by blowing into the air. This is a common practice among Muslims in the Indian subcontinent.

Several other Islamic scholars confirmed that the practice is common and well-known.
