Government of Telangana Launches “Maha Lakshmi Scheme” – Free Travel for Women and Transgender Persons in TSRTC Buses
In a move aimed at promoting inclusivity and ensuring ease of travel for women and transgender persons, the Government of Telangana has officially launched the "6 Guarantees - Maha Lakshmi" scheme.
Hyderabad: In a move aimed at promoting inclusivity and ensuring ease of travel for women and transgender persons, the Government of Telangana has officially launched the “6 Guarantees – Maha Lakshmi” scheme.
This initiative, effective from Saturday 9th December 2023, grants free travel privileges to girls and women of all age groups, as well as transgender individuals, on State-run Palle Velugu and Express Buses within the borders of Telangana.
The Transport, Roads & Buildings Department issued Government Order (G.O.Ms.No.47) today (on 8th December 2023), outlining the specifics of the “Maha Lakshmi” scheme. Under this scheme:
- Eligibility Criteria: The scheme is applicable to girls and women of all age groups and transgender persons who are domiciled in Telangana.
- Commencement Date: The scheme comes into effect from 9th December 2023, allowing eligible individuals to travel for free on Palle Velugu and Express Buses within the state.
- Inter-State Travel: Free travel extends to inter-state Express and Palle Velugu buses up to the borders of Telangana State.
- Government Reimbursement: The Telangana government will reimburse the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) for the expenses related to chargeable fares, equivalent to the actual distance travelled by eligible passengers.
The Vice Chairman & Managing Director of TSRTC is directed to take necessary actions for the implementation of the scheme. Additionally, plans are in place to develop a software-based Maha Lakshmi smart card, offering a streamlined and tech-driven solution for the beneficiaries.
This significant initiative is aligned with the government’s commitment to ensuring accessible and safe transportation for women and transgender persons, promoting their mobility and participation in various facets of life.
The concurrence of the Finance Department has been obtained, marking a step forward in the realization of the “Maha Lakshmi Scheme.”
This order, issued by A. Vani Prasad, Principal Secretary to the Government, reflects the government’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment within the state.
The launch of the “Maha Lakshmi Scheme” is anticipated to positively impact the lives of women, girls, and transgender persons, making transportation more accessible and empowering for all.
