Hyderabad: The Karnataka High Court today heard the petitions filed by five women from a government college in Udupi. The petitioners questioned hijab restrictions in some colleges of Karnataka. The high court will continue the hearing tomorrow.
Senior Advocate Devdutt Kamath, who is representing the petitioners, said that hijab and cross in educational institutions are reflections of positive secularism.
During the hearing Kamath quoted verse 24.31 of Holy Quran, and verse 24.33 and said these talk about head scarf or veil over head as essential religious practice.
When asked by the court to read out aloud the portion, advocate Kamath read verse 24.31 and verse 24.33 of the Holy Quran.
Kamath also submitted that while there can be a law prescribing uniforms it is only valid if the restrictions are reasonable and compatible with the fundamental rights.
