IIT-Mandi Director Blames Meat Eating For Landslides & Cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh_Video
At an event, Indian Institute of Technology-Mandi Director Laxmidhar Behera claimed that landslides and cloudbursts in Himachal Pradesh are linked to meat consumption. He urged students to stop eating meat for a better humanity. He also warned of environmental degradation if animals are butchered.
These statements faced strong criticism, with Congress questioning Behera’s suitability for his position.
General Secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the need for scientific temper in such roles. Ambrish Kumar Mahajan, from the Central University of Himachal Pradesh, attributed recent natural disasters to a combination of geological factors and human activities like resource overexploitation, industrial waste, and land use changes.
Mahajan also noted that extended periods of rain have led to soil saturation and landslides in the region. This isn’t Behera’s first controversial statement; previously, he claimed to have performed exorcisms to rid a friend’s parents’ apartment of “evil spirits,” citing beliefs in ghosts.
