Indian LPG Tanker ‘Jag Vikram’ Reaches Kandla Port with 20,400 MT LPG via Strait of Hormuz

Indian LPG tanker Jag Vikram carrying 20,400 MT LPG reaches Kandla Port via Strait of Hormuz, boosting India’s energy supply amid West Asia tensions.

In a major boost to India’s energy supply, the Indian-flagged LPG tanker ‘Jag Vikram’ has successfully reached Kandla Port, Gujarat, carrying 20,400 metric tonnes of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) after passing through the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz.

Officials confirmed that the vessel, owned by Great Eastern Shipping Company, crossed the Strait of Hormuz on April 11 and docked at Oil Jetty No. 1, Kandla Port late Tuesday night. The unloading of LPG is expected to begin shortly, strengthening India’s LPG supply network.

Why ‘Jag Vikram’ Journey Through Strait of Hormuz Is Significant

The journey of ‘Jag Vikram’ holds strategic importance due to ongoing tensions in West Asia, which had severely disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz since late February.

  • The Strait handles nearly one-fifth of global oil supply
  • Maritime movement was impacted due to military tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel
  • Threats and incidents involving commercial shipping raised security concerns

Following a recent ceasefire understanding between Washington and Tehran, ‘Jag Vikram’ has become the first Indian vessel to safely transit this critical route, marking a cautious revival of shipping operations.

Key Details of the LPG Tanker ‘Jag Vikram’

  • Vessel Name: Jag Vikram
  • Cargo: 20,400 metric tonnes LPG
  • Owner: Great Eastern Shipping Company
  • Route: Strait of Hormuz → Kandla Port
  • Arrival Location: Oil Jetty No. 1, Kandla Port, Gujarat
  • Crew Members: 24

Officials highlighted that this tanker is among the few Indian ships that have managed to exit the Gulf region since early March.

Status of Other Indian Ships and Government Response

Authorities revealed that around 15 Indian-flagged ships are still awaiting clearance to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

  • The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs
  • Efforts are ongoing to ensure safe passage and return of vessels
  • Additional Secretary Mukesh Mangal confirmed that operations will resume as conditions improve

He also stated that no untoward incidents involving Indian ships were reported in the last 24 hours.

Indian Seafarers and LPG Supply Situation

  • Over 2,100 Indian seafarers have been safely repatriated so far
  • 93 seafarers returned in the last 24 hours alone
  • Port operations across India continue smoothly without congestion

During a recent inter-ministerial briefing, the government confirmed that commercial LPG supply has recovered to nearly 70% of pre-crisis levels.

A coordinated mechanism involving oil companies and state authorities has been put in place to ensure fair distribution amid evolving West Asia conditions.

Strategic Relief for India’s Energy Security

The successful arrival of ‘Jag Vikram’ at Kandla Port with 20,400 MT LPG via the Strait of Hormuz is both a strategic and symbolic milestone for India. It signals improving maritime conditions and strengthens the country’s energy security and LPG supply chain during a period of global uncertainty.
