Justice Lisa Gill to Become First Woman Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court

Hyderabad: Justice Lisa Gill is set to become the first woman Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, following a recommendation by the Supreme Court Collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India.
The recommendation is part of the ongoing process of filling vacancies in constitutional positions across various High Courts in the country. Justice Gill, who is currently serving as a senior judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, is widely respected for her distinguished judicial career and expertise in constitutional and legal matters.
Under the Collegium’s new policy, Justice Lisa Gill will initially be appointed as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. She is expected to assume office as Chief Justice on April 25, after the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice, Dhiraj Singh Thakur.

Justice Gill is an alumna of Punjab University’s Faculty of Law, where she completed her B.A., LL.B., and LL.M. degrees. She began her legal career in 1990 and practiced extensively at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, handling criminal, civil, service, revenue, and constitutional matters.
Over the years, she has also represented the Union Territory of Chandigarh, as well as several boards and corporations. Recognizing her legal acumen and professional integrity, she was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on March 31, 2014.
Following formal approval from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice and the issuance of orders by the President of India, Justice Lisa Gill will officially take charge of her new responsibilities in Andhra Pradesh.
Her elevation marks a significant milestone in the history of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, reflecting the growing representation of women in the higher judiciary.
