Milad-un-Nabi Procession in Hyderabad Cancelled; Know the Reason Behind the Unprecedented Decision
Hyderabad: The Milad-un-Nabi procession for this year has been officially canceled, as announced by the Seerat-un-Nabi Academy, one of the organizations responsible for organizing this annual event in the twin cities. While some groups suggested postponing the procession due to its overlap with the Ganesh festival, Syed Ghulam Samdani Ali Quadri of Seerat-un-Nabi Academy clarified that a consensus could not be reached.
Mr. Quadri later stated that there would be no procession this year, marking the first time in approximately 16 years. This decision was made after extensive consultations with stakeholders, particularly Muslim youth who are active participants. He explained that having both the Milad procession and the Ganesh immersion procession on the same street posed a potential risk, as it could attract troublemakers. While those involved in the Milad procession and the organizers of the other event would not engage in such behavior, there was concern about the possibility of outsiders causing disturbances. This call was made jointly by the Markazi Anjuman-e-Quadria and the Seerat-un-Nabi Academy.
Mr. Quadri emphasized that Prophet Muhammad’s birth anniversary would still be honored, but in a more subdued manner, with celebrations taking place in homes and khankhwaahs. He urged the youth to avoid riding motorcycles on the eve of Milad, and encouraged them to visit the masjid, engage in acts of worship, and extend their support to the needy.
Sources indicated that the city police were apprehensive about the concurrent festivals and had heightened surveillance efforts. They were also working to provide guidance to individuals with a history of legal issues. While the police were determined to maintain law and order in the city, the organizers of Milad had to approach the youth in a sensitive manner due to the sensitive nature of the issue. Over the years, aside from the pandemic-related interruptions, the Milad procession has seen a surge in participation, largely due to the enthusiastic involvement of the youth.
Notably, Hyderabad parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi also stressed the importance of preserving peace in the city during this period.
