Renowned Islamic Studies Scholar, Prof Anwar Moazzam, Passes Away at 93

Hyderabad: Prof Anwar Moazzam, a distinguished figure in the realm of Islamic Studies and Urdu literature, breathed his last at the age of 93 in his residence today. The former Head of the Department of Islamic Studies at Osmania University left an indelible mark on academia and the literary world.

Funeral prayers of Prof Anwar Moazzam took place at Masjid e Baqi, located on Road number 12, Banjara Hills, at 8.30 pm after the Isha prayers today.

Prof Moazzam, born in 1930, embarked on his academic journey at Aligarh Muslim University, where he contributed significantly to the fields of Islam, Muslim societies, and Urdu literature. Later, he continued his impactful teaching and research at Osmania University.

Upon retiring from active teaching, Prof Moazzam continued to enrich the literary landscape with his prolific writings. His latest work, “Nightingale of an Uncreated Garden: Ghalib’s Intellectual Concerns” published in 2019, stands testament to his intellectual depth and scholarly pursuits. The revered scholar is survived by his wife, the celebrated Urdu writer Jeelani Bano, known as one of Urdu literature’s most prominent living figures. Prof Moazzam’s legacy extends to his accomplished son, Ashhar Farhan, a distinguished scientist.

The passing of Prof Anwar Moazzam marks the end of an era in Islamic Studies and Urdu literature, leaving a void that will be deeply felt by the academic and literary communities alike.
