Supreme Court Issues Fresh Notice to Telangana Speaker in BRS MLA Defection Case

Supreme Court issues fresh notice to Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar in the BRS MLA defection case after BJP seeks contempt action. Next hearing on February 6.

The Supreme Court of India has once again issued a notice to Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar over the long-pending BRS MLA defection case, intensifying political and legal focus on the issue. The matter, raised by the Telangana BJP, will now be heard next on February 6.

Supreme Court Takes Up BJP Petition on Defections

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Karol took up the BJP’s petition and attached it to an earlier pending case related to the defection of BRS MLAs in Telangana. The BJP alleges that earlier directions of the Supreme Court—mandating the Speaker to decide on disqualification petitions within three months—were not implemented.

BJP Seeks Contempt Proceedings Against Speaker

The Telangana BJP Legislature Party leader Alleti Maheshwar Reddy has moved the apex court seeking contempt of court proceedings against the Speaker for failing to act within the stipulated timeframe.

According to the petition, public statements made by Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender, indicating that he continues to remain with the Congress despite switching sides, were also cited as evidence of inaction.

Background: Earlier Notice and Rising Political Heat

In November last year, the Supreme Court had already issued a contempt notice to the Telangana Assembly Speaker in the same matter. With the BJP now attaching a fresh petition and the court issuing notices again, the BRS MLA defection case has re-emerged as a major political flashpoint in Telangana.

What Happens Next?

  • Next hearing: February 6
  • Key issue: Non-implementation of Supreme Court directions on MLA defections
  • Petitioner: Telangana BJP
  • Respondent: Telangana Assembly Speaker

The Supreme Court’s renewed intervention is expected to have a significant impact on Telangana’s political landscape in the coming weeks.
