AINU Doctors Remove Pumpkin-Sized Kidney Tumor in Complex Life-Saving Surgery

The patient, a resident of Kurnool, was admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal swelling, weakness, and loss of appetite. Medical examinations and imaging scans revealed a giant tumor originating from the right kidney, occupying almost the entire right side of the abdomen and pushing surrounding organs, including the intestines, pancreas, and liver, out of position.

Hyderabad: Doctors at Asian Institute of Nephrology & Urology (AINU Hospitals), Banjara Hills, successfully removed a massive 20-cm kidney tumor from a 53-year-old man in a complex life-saving surgery.

A multidisciplinary surgical team led by Dr. Purna Chandra Reddy, Executive Director and Chief Consultant Urologist at AINU, along with Dr. Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala, successfully carried out the highly challenging operation.

Doctors said the patient was initially not stable enough to undergo prolonged surgery and anesthesia. He was first treated with intravenous fluids, antibiotics, and blood transfusions to improve his condition before being taken up for surgery.

The team performed an open radical nephrectomy under general anesthesia. During the procedure, surgeons found that the tumor had completely replaced the kidney and was causing extensive internal bleeding while displacing vital abdominal organs.

Despite the complexity of the case, the surgical team carefully dissected the tumor without damaging surrounding structures. After identifying and separating the kidney blood vessels, doctors successfully removed the tumor, which measured nearly 20 cm and was described as “pumpkin-sized.”

Post-surgery, the patient recovered without major complications. Laboratory analysis later confirmed the growth as Renal Cell Carcinoma, a form of kidney cancer. Doctors said the surgical margins were clear, indicating complete removal of the tumor.

Speaking about the procedure, Dr. Purna Chandra Reddy said the surgery required meticulous planning and advanced surgical precision due to the tumor’s enormous size and proximity to critical organs.

He also stressed the importance of early diagnosis through regular health screenings and ultrasound examinations, stating that timely detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Dr. Rajesh Kumar Reddy Adapala said the successful surgery highlighted the advancements in uro-oncology treatment and surgical expertise available at AINU Hospitals.

Doctors at AINU further cautioned that urological cancers are increasing worldwide and urged people to undergo regular medical check-ups. The hospital added that early-stage kidney tumors can often be treated through minimally invasive robotic or laparoscopic surgeries, allowing partial removal of tumors while preserving healthy kidney tissue.
