Obesity Emerging as Major Public Health Challenge; Kamineni Hospitals Launches Dedicated Weight Loss Centre

Dr. Sravya emphasized that even a modest weight reduction of 5 to 10 percent can lead to substantial improvements in blood sugar levels, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, sleep quality, and overall health. She underlined the importance of early diagnosis and timely medical intervention in preventing long-term complications.

Hyderabad: With obesity increasingly being recognized as a major public health concern, Kamineni Hospitals has launched a dedicated Weight Loss Centre aimed at providing comprehensive and personalized obesity management through a multidisciplinary approach. The initiative comes amid rising obesity rates across India and growing concerns over its association with several lifestyle-related diseases.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. B. Sravya, Consultant Endocrinologist at Kamineni Hospitals, stressed that obesity should be treated as a chronic medical condition rather than merely a lifestyle issue. She noted that obesity significantly increases the risk of serious health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, infertility, osteoarthritis, and certain forms of cancer.

Highlighting the growing burden of obesity, Dr. Bhavani, Senior Consultant Diabetologist, said that nearly 890 million people worldwide are living with obesity, while more than 250 million adults in India are affected. She also expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents.

According to Dr. Bhavani, Telangana has emerged as one of the major obesity hotspots in the country, with a significant proportion of adults classified as overweight or obese. Untreated obesity, she warned, can contribute to diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, fatty liver disease, sleep disturbances, joint-related problems, anxiety, and depression.

Dr. D. Srinagavani, Head of Department and Consultant Physiotherapist, highlighted the critical role of physical activity in effective weight management. She explained that excess body weight places considerable strain on joints and muscles, often leading to pain, reduced mobility, and a cycle of further weight gain.

She said structured exercise programmes help improve mobility, preserve muscle mass, boost metabolism, reduce stress on joints, and prevent weight regain. Personalized fitness plans incorporating aerobic exercises, strength training, and functional mobility exercises are essential for long-term success, she added.

Emphasizing the importance of nutrition, Ms. B. Santosha, Consultant Dietitian and Nutritionist, said Medical Nutrition Therapy plays a vital role in obesity management. She noted that customized diet plans can effectively address obesity and associated conditions such as diabetes, fatty liver disease, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hypertension, and cholesterol disorders.

She added that each patient requires an individualized nutritional strategy based on medical history, lifestyle patterns, and dietary preferences to achieve sustainable weight loss outcomes.

The newly launched Weight Loss Centre brings together a team of endocrinologists, diabetologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, psychologists, genetic specialists, and bariatric experts under one roof. The facility offers comprehensive obesity assessment, metabolic and genetic risk evaluation, body composition analysis, personalized nutrition counselling, structured exercise programmes, medical management, behavioural support, and long-term follow-up care.

Hospital authorities said the centre aims to help individuals achieve sustainable weight loss while reducing the risk of obesity-related complications and improving overall quality of life.
