Rising Sexual Assaults Against Children in Telangana, 3,029 POCSO Cases Registered Last Year

Hyderabad: Concerns are mounting over the rising number of sexual assault cases involving children in Telangana, with 3,029 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act last year.

Child rights activists and social organisations have raised serious concerns over the government’s alleged failure to effectively prevent such crimes and ensure the safety and rehabilitation of victims. They claim that incidents of sexual assault against children continue to be reported from different parts of the state on a regular basis.

Activists have alleged that a lack of coordination among various government departments is making it difficult to provide comprehensive support to victims and their families. They have called for stronger security measures for children and families who file POCSO complaints, along with timely counselling and rehabilitation services.

Concerns have also been raised over the alleged lack of monitoring of accused persons and criminals involved in such cases. Activists argue that effective coordination between the police, Home Department, child welfare authorities, probation officers and other concerned agencies is essential to protect victims and prevent repeat offences.

The recent Shabad incident has also been cited by critics as an example of the alleged failure to provide adequate security and protection to victims. The incident has intensified demands for stronger safeguards for children and their families during and after the legal proceedings.

Social activists have further alleged that probation officers at the district level have been negligent in discharging their responsibilities, calling for greater accountability and regular monitoring of cases involving children.

Activists have urged the Telangana government to adopt a comprehensive strategy to address crimes against children, strengthen the implementation of the POCSO Act, improve inter-departmental coordination and ensure that victims receive security, counselling and legal support.

They stressed that merely registering POCSO cases is not enough and that the government must take concrete steps to prevent such crimes, protect vulnerable children and ensure swift justice for victims.
