Singareni Prioritises Telangana Power Needs, supplies 90% of Power-Sector Coal to State

With electricity consumption increasing amid El Niño conditions and thermal power plants seeking higher coal supplies, several utilities from different states have approached Singareni for additional coal. However, the company said Telangana’s requirements remain its top priority.
Acting on the directions of Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Singareni has been maintaining steady coal supplies to thermal power stations in the state.
Nearly 90% of Coal Supplied to Telangana
Singareni supplied 40.51 lakh tonnes of coal to power utilities across the country during August. Of this, 36.26 lakh tonnes, or nearly 90 per cent, was supplied to power-generating stations in Telangana.
The company supplied an average of 1,30,687 tonnes of coal per day to thermal power stations during the month. Telangana plants received around 1,16,966 tonnes per day.
Singareni said the figures reflect its policy of placing the interests of its home state ahead of additional commercial opportunities from supplying coal to other states.
TGGENCO Gets Half of Telangana’s Coal Supply
Telangana Power Generation Corporation Limited (TGGENCO) received the largest share of Singareni’s coal supplies during August.
The company transported 20,16,356 tonnes of coal to TGGENCO through 382 railway rakes, accounting for about 50 per cent of the total coal supplied to power stations in Telangana.
The Kothagudem Thermal Power Station received 6,99,661 tonnes through 179 railway rakes, while the Yadadri Thermal Power Station received 7,99,017 tonnes through 203 rakes.
The Kakatiya Thermal Power Plant at Bhupalpally received 1,02,959 tonnes, while the Bhadradri Thermal Power Plant received 4,14,719 tonnes.
Singareni also supplied 7,28,164 tonnes to the Ramagundam NTPC plants and 4,15,839 tonnes to the NTPC Telangana plant. The Singareni Thermal Power Plant at Jaipur received another 4,65,579 tonnes.
Other States Seek Additional Singareni Coal
Demand for Singareni coal has increased as thermal power plants across the country seek to maintain adequate fuel stocks.
Among the utilities that have sought additional supplies are:
- Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), West Bengal: 10 lakh tonnes
- NTECL, Durgapur: 12 lakh tonnes
- NSPCL-Jhajjar (Aravali): 10 lakh tonnes
- NTECL, Tamil Nadu: 20 lakh tonnes
Other power utilities have also approached Singareni for coal supplies.
Despite these requests, the company said it is giving priority to Telangana’s thermal power stations to safeguard the state’s electricity requirements.
Naini Coal Mine in Odisha Supplies Telangana
Coal production from Singareni’s Naini coal mine in Odisha has also started contributing to Telangana’s power requirements.
The company has already transported one railway rake each from Naini to the Singareni Thermal Power Plant and Yadadri Thermal Power Station.
Around 15 lakh tonnes of coal at Naini is currently ready for extraction. However, transportation from the mine to the railway siding is restricted to night hours, limiting the pace of coal dispatches.
Singareni said efforts are continuing to transport additional coal to Telangana despite logistical constraints.
Special Officers Deployed to Monitor Coal Supply
To ensure uninterrupted coal production and transportation, Singareni Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddha Prakash Jyothi has appointed five special officers to monitor supplies to thermal power stations.
The officers are overseeing coal production, quality and transportation, while the company is coordinating with railway authorities to ensure sufficient rakes are available for timely dispatch.
Singareni said coal production and transportation have been steadily increased across its mining areas to meet growing demand.
The company reiterated that, despite strong commercial demand from other states, it has reduced supplies to those markets where necessary to ensure that Telangana’s power requirements remain the first priority.
