Another attempt to force change Taj Mahal’s name falls flat

Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court had also dismissed a petition in May which claimed that Taj Mahal was built after demolishing a temple. In harsh words, the court had asked the petitioner not to make mockery of public interest litigation system.

Agra: In another setback to elements attempting to force change the name of Taj Mahal to Tejo Mahalaya, the proposal could not be moved in a special meeting of Nagar Nigam on Wednesday due to chaos.

Mayor Naveen Jain adjourned the House for an indefinite period amid heavy uproar. In this special meeting of the Nagar Nigam that started after 3 pm, there was a huge uproar in the House before the proposal to change the name of Taj Mahal could be discussed.

A war of words began between BJP and BSP councilors. A Congress councilor arrived with Supreme Court and High Court orders saying that the courts had earlier reprimanded the petitioners for the proposal to change the name of Taj Mahal, therefore, this issue should not be considered by Nagar Nigam.

However, the BJP corporator was optimistic that the proposal would be taken up in the next session.

The proposal for name change was moved by Shoba Ram Rathore (60), an elected BJP corporator from ward no. 88 (Harjupura, Tajganj). In the proposal Rathore claimed that Tejo Mahalaya is the actual name of this structure  which was in fact the property of Raja Jai Singh usurped by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan whose wife’s name was Arjumand Bano and not Mumtaz as wrongly mentioned in the annals of history.

It must be noted that Taj Mahal is a protected monument under supervision of Archaeological Survey of India which has till date denied accepting the theory of Taj Mahal being a temple.

Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court had also dismissed a petition in May which claimed that Taj Mahal was built after demolishing a temple. In harsh words, the court had asked the petitioner not to make mockery of public interest litigation system.
