BCCI Selection Committee to Soon Choose New T20 Captain

The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel will also decide on the new T20 captain in the meeting, as the current Indian skipper Virat Kohli has already announced not to lead the team in the T20 format after the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Abu Dhabi: BCCI national selection committee is expected to meet in the next few days to decide the Indian squad for the upcoming home series against New Zealand.

The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel will also decide on the new T20 captain in the meeting, as the current Indian skipper Virat Kohli has already announced not to lead the team in the T20 format after the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Currently, India’s vice-captain Rohit Sharma is the leading contender to become next T20 captain, but the seniors are likely to be given rest for three T20 Internationals against New Zealand, as the players have been on the roads since April 2020.

Players first played Indian Premiere League (IPL), then they featured in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, followed by the Test series in England and the second phase of IPL and now the T20 World Cup.

Since Kohli has announced to step down from the captaincy role in the shortest format, there could be a discussion whether the captaincy needs to be split for the white-ball format. Currently, the chairman of selection panel, Chetan Sharma and a panelist Abe Kuruvilla are in Dubai, while the rest of the members of selection committee are in India.

Players selected for the series against New Zealand may be asked to report by November 10, as they will have to undergo mandatory five-day quarantine period prior to begin their practice sessions.

Besides, the formalities for the appointment of the new head coach of India are yet to be completed. Rahul Dravid who has already applied for the post, likely to join team India as head coach.
