Ben Stokes Makes Emotional Retirement Announcement

At the start of play on Day 4, Ben Stokes addressed his England teammates in the dressing room.

He said:

“This is my last two days as your captain and my last two days representing England.”

The video of his speech was later released on social media by England Cricket.

The announcement came about 15 minutes before the tea break. Moments later, Stokes claimed a wicket and received a standing ovation as he led England off the field at the end of the session.

Stokes also told his teammates:

“The reasons can wait (about) why. But I’ve had many trips to the well before for this team and I’ve got one more trip to do.”

According to the report:

  • Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson visited a London nightclub after the first Test.
  • An England team security official was reportedly struck by a rugby player from English club Saracens.
  • The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) dropped Stokes and Atkinson for the second Test.
  • The ECB later said both players had “breached specific contractual obligations” and issued them written warnings.
  • The sport’s independent oversight body, the Cricket Regulator, later concluded there was “insufficient evidence to establish that any regulatory breach occurred.”
  • Stokes was recalled for the third Test.

ECB Chairman Pays Tribute

ECB Chairman Richard Thompson praised Ben Stokes’ contribution to English cricket.

He described Stokes as:

“One of England’s greatest ever cricketers and one of the defining figures of his generation.”

Thompson added that Stokes’ performances under pressure, relentless competitiveness and ability to deliver in crucial moments created lasting memories for millions of fans.

He also said Stokes inspired young people to embrace cricket with positivity and belief, adding:

“We are losing a batsman, a bowler, a captain and a talisman.”
