Deepak, Poonam Shine as India Open Boxing World Cup Campaign with Two Wins in China

New Delhi: Indian boxers Deepak and Poonam began the country’s campaign at the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) in China on a positive note, registering impressive victories on the opening day to advance to the next round of their respective categories.
Poonam delivered a dominant performance in the women’s 54kg category, defeating Uzbekistan’s Aziza Yokubova by a unanimous 5-0 decision in the preliminary round of 32. The convincing victory secured her place in the next stage of the competition.
Deepak matched her success in the men’s 70kg division, outclassing Turkmenistan’s Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov with an identical 5-0 verdict in the preliminary round of 32 to move forward in the tournament.
However, the remainder of the Indian contingent endured a difficult day, with several boxers bowing out after suffering defeats in their respective bouts.
In the preliminary round of 16, Rishi Singh (50kg) lost to Azerbaijan’s Subhan Mamedov, while Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom (75kg) was defeated by Canada’s Tammara Thibeault. Sawan Gill also exited the competition after losing to Norway’s Omar Shiha in the men’s 90kg category.

Anmol (60kg) came close to securing a victory but narrowly lost 2-3 to the United States’ Salim Ellis Bey. Harsh Choudhary’s challenge in the men’s 90kg category ended after his contest against Sweden’s Elwin Belezika was stopped in the third round due to injury, resulting in an RSC (I) decision.
India also faced disappointment in the quarterfinal stage, where Naina was defeated 0-5 by China’s Xiaomeng Wang in the women’s 80kg category. In the women’s 90+kg division, Alfiya Tarannum Akram Khan Pathan suffered a 0-5 loss against Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik.
Despite the setbacks, India‘s campaign remains alive through Deepak and Poonam, who will look to build on their strong starts and carry the country’s challenge forward as the tournament progresses.
