Farmers Stage Sit-In Protest at Karnal Secretariat

Karnal: Farmers staged a ‘dharna’ (sit-in) protest in front of the district administration office in Karnal on Tuesday after reaching the mini-secretariat.

On their way to the secretariat, some demonstrators also dismantled a barricade barring their path.

The farmers’ march towards the secretariat, which began after their meeting with district authorities ended inconclusively on Tuesday afternoon, caused a huge traffic gridlock in Karnal.

The demonstrators were initially stopped by police near Namaste Chowk (intersection). The cops only permitted the demonstrators to proceed after a brief discussion.

Hundreds of thousands of agitators riding on tractors and wielding ‘latths’ (sticks) are said to be making their way towards Karnal’s mini-secretariat.

Yogendra Yadav, a political activist, stated that he and Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait were briefly held by police.

He, on the other hand, expressed dissatisfaction with the way things are going, stating that he expected the entire congregation and march to be done peacefully.

“This is not how we had hoped things would turn out. We are willing to be arrested, but we do not want any politics to get involved in this matter “He informed the journalists.

An 11-member farmers delegation from the kisan mahapanchyat delivered a memorandum of their demands to the Karnal Deputy Commissioner this morning at the mini secretariat.

The farmers reaffirmed their demand for strict action against the IAS official who ordered a lathicharge against protestors on August 28 in the memorandum. Political activist Yogendra Yadav led the delegation, which included farmer protest leader Rakesh Tikait, Karnal-based Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Gurnaam Singh Chaduni, BKU president Balbir Singh Rajewal, BKU (Sidhupur) state president member Jagjit Singh Dallewal, Ajay Rana, Dr Darshan Pal, and other farmer leaders.
