Hyderabad: All schools across Telangana will remain closed on Saturday, April 5, 2025, in observance of Babu Jagjivan Ram Jayanti. The state government has declared the day a public holiday to honor the birth anniversary of the prominent Indian freedom fighter and statesman.

Babu Jagjivan Ram (5 April 1908 – 6 July 1986), fondly known as Babuji, played a key role in India’s freedom movement and post-independence governance. He was the longest-serving Union Cabinet Minister in Indian history and served as the Deputy Prime Minister of India from January to July 1979. His leadership as Defence Minister during the 1971 Indo-Pak war was instrumental in the creation of Bangladesh.

Apart from his contributions to defense, Babuji also significantly impacted Indian agriculture, particularly during the Green Revolution and the food crisis of 1974. A staunch advocate for Dalit rights, he founded the All India Depressed Classes League in 1935 and worked relentlessly for social justice.

To commemorate his legacy, educational institutions across the state will observe a holiday tomorrow.
