HYDRAA Hit by Flood of Complaints: 70% Grievances Over Nala Encroachments

Hyderabad: Even as the state celebrated Telangana Formation Day on Monday, complaints poured into the HYDRAA (Hyderabad Drainage and Road Authority) Prajavani program—highlighting persistent civic issues across the city. A total of 23 complaints were received, of which nearly 70% were related to nala (stormwater drain) encroachments, causing serious concern with the onset of monsoon.

Drain Grievances Dominate HYDRAA’s Prajavani
Out of the 23 complaints submitted, most focused on the encroachment and narrowing of vital drainage channels across Hyderabad. Other complaints included unauthorized occupation of roads, parks, and government lands.
Land for Community Hall Encroached in Bhudevinagar
In Bhudevinagar’s Saidatta Gardens, a 225-square-yard plot allotted to GHMC in 2004 for building a community hall has been reportedly encroached. Despite repeated requests by residents over the years, no construction was taken up, prompting them to seek redress through the Prajavani platform.

Illegal Occupation of Roads in Khanamet Village
Residents of Khanamet, under Serilingampally mandal, reported that in survey numbers 11/20 and 11/21, land designated by the Gurukul Trust for residential layouts and roads in 1983 has now been encroached. Locals demanded urgent intervention to restore the original layout and public access roads.
Brindavan Apartments Face Flood Risk in Chikoti Gardens
In Begumpet’s Chikoti Gardens area, a narrowed nala is causing floodwater to enter Brindavan Apartments during rains. Residents recalled that their cellar was submerged in 2020 floods, and have now requested urgent widening and protection of the storm drain to avoid repeat scenarios.
Encroachments Threaten 7 Colonies in Kukatpally
Locals in Kukatpally raised concerns about encroachments within the FTL (Full Tank Level) of Rangadhama Cheruvu and on the nala that links it to IDL lake. With the drain blocked, seven residential colonies are at risk of flooding during heavy rains.
Hasmathpet and Picket Drains Blocked, Several Areas Affected
Encroachments and narrowing of Hasmathpet and Picket nalas are now affecting low-lying areas like Paya Colony, Viman Nagar, BHEL Colony, Avanti Colony, and Rasoolpura Basti, which face repeated waterlogging during rains, locals said in their complaints.
Sayeedabad and Balajinagar Welfare Associations Raise Alarm
In Sayeedabad and Balajinagar, stormwater and sewage drains have been encroached. Representatives of the Balajinagar Welfare Association noted that if Owaisi Hospital Lake overflows, floodwaters should ideally flow into Saroor Nagar Lake via the designated nala. However, due to narrowing, adjacent basti (slum) areas are now at risk of submersion.
HYDRAA’s Next Steps Awaited
Though HYDRAA has begun acting on complaints, residents are calling for swift demolition of encroachments and restoration of the stormwater channels to ensure that Hyderabad does not face a repeat of previous urban flooding disasters.
