Washington: A shocking incident of alleged religiously motivated violence has been reported from the US state of Utah, where an Indian-origin Muslim man was reportedly stabbed after being questioned about his religion.
The victim has been identified as Syed Suhailuddin, who works at a shopping mall in West Valley City, Utah.
According to media reports, the suspect, identified as Peter Michael Larsen, approached Suhailuddin and allegedly asked him about his name, country of origin, and religion before launching a knife attack. Authorities said the victim sustained multiple stab wounds and suffered serious injuries in the assault.
Suhailuddin was immediately rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery. Witnesses at the scene reportedly intervened in an attempt to stop the attacker, during which the suspect also sustained injuries. Police later took him into custody.
Investigators said the suspect has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a prohibited dangerous weapon. Court documents further revealed that Larsen allegedly admitted during questioning that the attack was motivated by religious hatred and that he intended to target Muslims.

The Indian Consulate in San Francisco expressed deep concern over the incident and said it remains in close contact with the victim’s family and friends. The consulate assured that all possible consular assistance would be extended and confirmed that it is coordinating with local authorities while closely monitoring the investigation.
Meanwhile, police have launched a full investigation into the incident, and prosecutors are considering filing additional charges against the accused.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) strongly condemned the attack and called on elected representatives to discourage anti-Muslim rhetoric and hate speech.
Local Muslim leaders noted that incidents of harassment, threats, and violence against Muslims in Utah have increased in recent years, describing the stabbing as one of the most serious attacks faced by the state’s Muslim community.
