Pieces of kalas of the dome of Jama Masjid, Delhi brought down

The central dome of Jama Masjid in Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area was damaged due to the heavy rain and strong winds.

New Delhi: The pieces of kalas of the original dome of the Mughal-era Jama Masjid in Delhi have been brought down and preserved. The pieces were brought down using a skylift.

Mirza M Arif, a scientist involved in the work, said on Sunday that efforts would be made to bring down the pieces hanging from the dome on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The management of the Jama Masjid hired Mirza Arif and experts from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) to bring the pieces of the kalas of the 17th century mosque’s original dome.

On Monday, May 30, heavy rain and thunderstorm in Delhi damaged quite a few buildings, including Jama Masjid. The central dome of Jama Masjid in Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area was damaged due to the heavy rain and strong winds.
