Minister Ponnam Prabhakar Launches 60 Electric Buses at Kukatpally Depot, Telangana Targets More EV Buses by 2027

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar launched 60 electric buses at Kukatpally Depot in Hyderabad. Telangana plans to introduce more EV buses by 2027 to reduce pollution and strengthen RTC services.

Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar inaugurated 60 electric buses at the Kukatpally Bus Depot under the aegis of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC).

During the program organized at the Kukatpally Bus Depot, the minister lit the ceremonial lamp and flagged off the 60 electric buses.

Telangana Government Promoting Eco-Friendly Electric Vehicles

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said that eco-friendly electric vehicles are being introduced for the public as part of the Green Challenge initiative.

He stated that the government aims to bring more electric buses into service by 2027 with the objective of reducing pollution.

The minister said that currently 960 electric buses are operating in the state, out of which 545 EV buses are serving in Hyderabad city alone. He further stated that 580 buses are operating under intercity services.

Telangana to Introduce 2,200 More Electric Buses

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed that another 2,200 electric buses would be introduced in the state through a Central Government scheme.

He stated that implementation of a total of 3,000 electric buses could help reduce 600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The minister said the government is promoting EV vehicles to ensure that Hyderabad does not turn into a polluted city like Delhi. He added that everyone knows the impact of petrol and diesel prices on public transport.

RTC Operating 10,000 Buses Across Telangana

The minister stated that RTC currently has 10,000 buses, including 1,000 electric buses.

According to him, electric buses help reduce both traffic and pollution. He said that 35 lakh passengers are using RTC services daily in the twin cities.

Reforms Introduced in RTC After Congress Government Came to Power

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said several reforms have been introduced in RTC after the Congress government came to power.

He stated that with new recruitments and the introduction of new buses, RTC is emerging as one of the best organizations in the country.

The minister clarified that the government is committed to the welfare of RTC workers. He said that every second Tuesday of the month, DMs, RMs, and other senior officials discuss workers’ problems.

He further stated that recognition elections for RTC unions would be conducted soon, after which meetings would be held with union representatives to resolve issues.

Mahalakshmi Scheme Benefits Women Passengers

Minister Ponnam Prabhakar revealed that women have so far utilized 310 crore tickets under the Mahalakshmi Scheme.

He said that along with providing free travel facilities for women, the government is also working to make women owners of buses.

New Depot to be Established at KPHB

Responding to the request made by Kukatpally MLA Madhavaram Krishna Rao, the minister announced that a new depot would be established at KPHB.

As part of the expansion of the Kukatpally Depot, he instructed the District Collector and RTC officials to write a letter to Housing Board authorities for setting up a new depot on 5 acres of land.

Public Transport Being Strengthened in Hyderabad

The minister said that as new colonies are increasing in Hyderabad, the public transport system is also being strengthened.

He assured that RTC workers’ issues would be resolved soon and called upon everyone to work hard for the development of the organization.

Ponnam Prabhakar further stated that EV buses would run extensively on roads in the Kukatpally area to transform it into a pollution-free zone.
