Red Fort Closed to Public Until August 15 Ahead of Independence Day Celebrations

New Delhi: The historic Red Fort in the national capital has been closed to the general public and tourists from July 15 to August 15 in view of preparations for India’s 80th Independence Day celebrations.
According to an order issued by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the monument will remain closed for public access until the conclusion of the Independence Day events. The decision has been taken to facilitate preparations for the ceremony and ensure strict security arrangements at the venue.

The Red Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has served as the venue for India’s official Independence Day celebrations every year since August 15, 1947. On the occasion, the Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the nation from the iconic monument.
Officials said that on August 15, only individuals carrying special passes issued by the government will be permitted to enter the Red Fort premises. Extensive security measures are also expected to be put in place for the event.
