Supreme Court Declines Immediate Hearing on ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ Plea
According to the petition filed in the Supreme Court, the activities linked to the “Cockroach Janata Party” were allegedly harming the image of the judiciary. Advocate N K Goswami, appearing for the petitioner on Monday, argued before the bench that the satirical movement was damaging the reputation of the judicial system.
Responding to the submission, the bench remarked, “Do not take it so emotionally.”
Another lawyer argued that the petitioner was also seeking a CBI investigation into the issue of fake law degrees. The counsel further stated that conversations taking place inside the courtroom should not be commercially used.
Reacting to this argument, Chief Justice Surya Kant said, “There is no such serious necessity. We will see.”
How the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ Movement Started
The “Cockroach Janata Party” emerged earlier this month as a satirical online movement and quickly gained popularity on social media platforms, especially among young people.
The movement reportedly began after a hearing held on May 15 in the Supreme Court of India. During the hearing, a bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed concern over unemployed young lawyers leaving the legal profession and moving towards social media activities and Right to Information (RTI) activism.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant reportedly commented, “Such youngsters are like cockroaches who are not getting employment in this profession. Some are active on social media and some have become RTI activists.”
Chief Justice Surya Kant Later Clarified His Remarks
Later, Chief Justice Surya Kant clarified that his remarks were directed at people entering the profession using fake qualifications and fake degrees, and not at unemployed youth in general.
The Supreme Court has currently declined urgent hearing of the plea seeking a CBI investigation into the activities of the “Cockroach Janata Party.” The matter relates to allegations that the satirical social media movement is harming the judiciary’s image following the Chief Justice’s “cockroach” remarks made during the May 15 hearing in New Delhi. The issue remains under consideration.
