Hyderabad: The Telangana Food Safety Department has launched a major crackdown on the manufacture and sale of adulterated ghee across the state, seizing 850 kilograms of suspected ghee and sending 91 samples for laboratory analysis.

According to Food Safety Commissioner Dr. Sangeeta Satyanarayana, the special enforcement drive was conducted on July 14 and 15 based on intelligence inputs. Food Safety officials, assisted by the police, carried out surprise inspections at multiple locations across Telangana.

Preliminary findings indicated that some manufacturers were allegedly mixing palm oil, vanaspati, and other non-milk fats and selling the product as pure ghee. Officials also found that several establishments were manufacturing and marketing ghee without obtaining the mandatory Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licence or registration.

In Hyderabad’s CURE area, officials inspected 14 establishments and collected 15 ghee samples for laboratory testing. During the operation, around 60 kilograms of ghee deemed unfit for human consumption was destroyed, while 850 kilograms of suspected adulterated ghee was seized and placed under safe custody pending laboratory test results.

Dr. Satyanarayana said strict legal action would be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, if laboratory reports confirm adulteration. She added that the department remains committed to protecting public health and ensuring that consumers receive safe and quality food products.

The Food Safety Department has also urged consumers to purchase ghee only from licensed manufacturers and to report any suspected cases of food adulteration to the authorities.
