Renowned veteran actor Waheeda Rehman is set to receive the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award this year, the highest accolade in Indian cinema, as announced by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur.
Rehman, celebrated as one of India’s finest performers, is most acclaimed for her roles in iconic films such as “Pyaasa,” “CID,” “Guide,” “Kaagaz Ke Phool,” “Khamoshi,” and “Trishul.”
Thakur shared the news on his official X account, expressing profound joy and respect for Rehman’s remarkable contribution to Indian cinema.
The 85-year-old actress embarked on her cinematic journey with Telugu films “Rojulu Maraayi” and “Jayasimha” in 1955, and made her Hindi debut with the 1956 film “CID,” alongside Dev Anand. With a career spanning over five decades, Rehman has graced the screen in over 90 films across multiple languages. Her portrayal as a clanswoman in “Reshma and Shera” (1971) earned her a National Film Award. She has previously been honored with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan.
Minister Thakur, acknowledging the recent passage of the historic Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam by Parliament, commended Rehman’s lifetime achievement award as a fitting tribute to her role as a leading lady of Indian Cinema, and for her subsequent philanthropic endeavors. He extended his congratulations and deep respect for her invaluable contributions to the cinematic heritage of India.
Rehman’s most recent appearance was in the 2021 coming-of-age sports drama, “Skater Girl.”
