Hyderabad: In a major initiative to integrate former Maoist youth into mainstream society, the Telangana government has appointed 20 former Maoist tribal youth as Giri Darshaks (tourist guides). The appointment letters were handed over in the first phase by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, as part of a rehabilitation and livelihood program. The initiative is currently being implemented.

20 Tribal Youth Appointed as Giri Darshaks

The Telangana government announced that:

  • 20 former Maoist tribal youth have been selected in the first phase
  • They have been appointed as Giri Darshaks (tourist guides)
  • The aim is to integrate them into mainstream society and provide livelihoods

The appointment letters were distributed during the programme held for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Future City Police Commissionerate in Bharat Future City.

Training Provided Across Departments

To prepare the selected youth, the government provided training through multiple departments:

  • Police Department
  • Tribal Welfare Department
  • Tourism Department
  • Forest Department
  • Endowments Department

This training enables them to:

  • Assist tourists in tourist areas
  • Ensure safety and compliance with forest rules

Deployment in Mulugu and Bhadradri Kothagudem

In the first phase:

  • The 20 selected Giri Darshaks will work in:
    • Mulugu district
    • Bhadradri Kothagudem district

Their responsibilities include:

  • Assisting tourists in major tourist destinations
  • Explaining local culture and history
  • Supporting tourist safety and security
  • Ensuring adherence to forest regulations

Focus on Rehabilitation and Tourism Development

The initiative aims to:

  • Integrate tribal youth into society
  • Build confidence among former Maoist youth
  • Involve them in tourism development programs

These appointments come in the backdrop of:

  • Development programs in Mulugu and Bhadradri Kothagudem districts
  • Areas that were previously under the influence of terrorism

Special Uniforms and Role Transformation

Officials stated that:

  • The Giri Darshaks will perform duties in special uniforms
  • “Those who once showed the way to Maoists will now show the way to tourists”

CM Orders Further Training and Scholarships

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy directed that:

  • Selected candidates should receive 6 months of soft skills training
  • Training will be conducted at Young India Skills University
  • Training will include multiple skill areas along with soft skills
  • Scholarships will be provided during the training period

Current Status

  • 20 candidates appointed in first phase
  • Training and deployment ongoing
  • Further capacity building planned
