Hyderabad: In a significant milestone for advanced neurological healthcare, KIMS Hospitals, Secunderabad, on Sunday announced the successful completion of more than 10,000 brain tumor surgeries. Marking World Brain Tumor Day, the hospital also unveiled a state-of-the-art Robotic Digital Microscope aimed at enhancing precision and outcomes in complex neurosurgical procedures.
The advanced technology was launched by Dr. B. Bhaskar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Group of Hospitals, who highlighted the transformative role of modern medical innovations in improving patient care.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Rao said rapid advancements in healthcare technology are making highly complex surgeries safer and more effective while reducing recovery times. He noted that the newly introduced Robotic Digital Microscope would significantly improve the treatment of intricate brain and spinal cord disorders by providing surgeons with enhanced visual precision during procedures.
He also emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and pointed out that advanced treatment options such as Gamma Knife Radiosurgery, available at KIMS Hospitals, have greatly improved outcomes for patients with brain tumors and other neurological disorders.
Dr. Rao expressed concern over changing lifestyle patterns, particularly among younger generations, warning that excessive use of smartphones, laptops, and high-volume earphones, coupled with sedentary habits, could negatively impact brain health.
Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Manas Kumar Panigrahi urged the public not to ignore persistent headaches, especially those that occur in the early morning hours.
“A recurring headache, particularly one that is severe upon waking, should not be dismissed as a routine issue. It may be an early indicator of a brain tumor and requires medical evaluation,” he said.
Dr. Panigrahi revealed that nearly 10 percent of the 10,000 brain tumor surgeries performed at KIMS involved children, challenging the common misconception that brain tumors primarily affect older adults.

Explaining the significance of the new robotic system, he said neurosurgery requires exceptional precision due to the delicate nature of the brain and spinal cord. The Robotic Digital Microscope provides high-definition imaging that helps surgeons clearly differentiate between healthy tissue and tumors, thereby minimizing damage to surrounding structures and improving surgical outcomes.
He also advocated for the inclusion of brain screening in routine preventive healthcare programs, noting that standard master health check-ups and insurance packages generally focus on cardiac evaluations while overlooking neurological assessments.
Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr. Shwetha highlighted that symptoms of brain tumors can vary depending on the tumor’s size and location. Common warning signs include persistent headaches, vomiting, blurred or double vision, seizures, weakness in the limbs, speech difficulties, memory loss, and sudden behavioral changes.
She noted that brain tumors remain among the most common cancers affecting children and are increasingly being diagnosed in young and middle-aged adults. Dr. Shwetha advised people to maintain healthy lifestyles, avoid self-medication for chronic headaches, and seek timely consultation with neurologists or neurosurgeons if symptoms persist.
The event was attended by leading neurospecialists, including Dr. Chandrasekhar Naidu, Dr. Sujith Kumar, Dr. Vijayanth, Dr. Gopal Krishna, and Dr. C.V.S. Dasaradhi, along with former patients and their families.
As part of the World Brain Tumor Day celebrations, KIMS Hospitals also organized a special painting competition for children and distributed prizes to the winners, highlighting the importance of awareness and early detection of neurological disorders.
