Hyderabad Police Alert Citizens as Domestic Help Theft Cases Rise Sharply
According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, as many as 565 cases of theft involving domestic workers have been registered in the city over the past two years. Of these, 65 were serious cases, while 500 were classified as ordinary theft cases.
Hyderabad: Hyderabad City Police has urged residents to exercise caution while hiring domestic workers amid a rise in theft cases allegedly involving household help. Police have advised citizens to ensure mandatory police verification and conduct proper background checks before employing domestic workers.
According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, as many as 565 cases of theft involving domestic workers have been registered in the city over the past two years. Of these, 65 were serious cases, while 500 were classified as ordinary theft cases.
Police said IT professionals, students living alone, senior citizens and business establishments are among those most vulnerable to such crimes.
Zone-wise data showed that Jubilee Hills recorded the highest number of cases at 173, followed by Secunderabad with 88, Khairatabad with 77, Golconda with 70, Rajendranagar with 63, Shamshabad with 49 and Charminar with 45 cases.
Police officials said some domestic workers first gain the trust of family members before observing their daily routines, the location of valuables and keys, and weak spots in CCTV surveillance. They allegedly use this information to carry out thefts when an opportunity arises.

In some recent cases, police found that individuals linked to organised groups from other states and even abroad had entered homes by posing as domestic workers and were later found to be involved in thefts.
The Hyderabad Police has advised residents to collect an Aadhaar card or other government-issued identity document, a recent photograph, permanent address and mobile number before hiring domestic help. Citizens have also been asked to verify the worker’s previous employment details and complete police verification before allowing them to work.
Police have further advised employers to keep a close watch on newly hired domestic workers during the initial weeks of employment.
Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and gated communities have also been urged to maintain proper records of domestic workers entering residential premises, issue identity cards or entry passes, and ensure that CCTV cameras remain operational at all times.
Police appealed to citizens to immediately report any suspicious activities involving domestic workers, sudden disappearance of keys or instances where a worker goes missing without informing the employer.
